L'lser d'amore
The Elixir of Love

Background

L'elisir d'amore was the most frequently performed of Donizetti's works during his lifetime and is the earliest of his works never to have left the standard repertoire. This is particularly impressive when one considers that this opera was written in less than a month's time from libretto to final score. Elisir was written in response to a request for an opera buffa from Alessandro Lanari, who was producing a season at the Teatro Canobbiana and was an unqualified success at its premiere.
