Libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni

Set in Egypt during the mystical time of the Pharaohs, the opera tells of the plight of Aïda, an enslaved Ethiopian Princess, whose enduring love for an enemy commander leads to conspiracy, defeat and ultimately, death.

As the Egyptian Commander Radames prepares to attack the Ethiopians, he dreams of victory on the battlefield in love in “Celeste Aïda”, one of the most beautiful and difficult arias in the Italian repertoire. Aïda’s “Ritorna Vincitor” expresses love for Radames, fears for her father and suffering of servitude under Amneris, the Egyptian noble who also loves Radames. And nowhere in opera is there a more familiar melody or a grander spectacle than the “Triumphal March”, celebrating Radames’ victorious return with the enslaved Ethiopian King, Amonasro.

Italian soprano Tiziana Caruso, a rising European star, debuts in the role of Aïda. Giovanna Casolla, one of finest interpreters of the Italian dramatic repertoire, will give her first U.S. performances in the role of Amneris. Tenor Antonello Palombi returns to the BOC in the role of Radames which he has performed at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Michigan Opera Theatre and Teatro La Fenice. Amonasro, the Ethiopian king, will be sung by baritone Mark Rucker, who has also performed the role as his Metropolitan Opera debut, at the Arena di Verona and for Atlanta Opera. Ashley Howard Wilkinson, whose commanding presence and voice have impressed Metropolitan Opera, Berlin Staatsoper and Broadway audiences, makes his BOC debut as Ramfis and will return at the end of the season as Crown in Porgy and Bess.  Maestro Andrea Licata, whose mastery of the Italian repertoire was evident during La Fanciulla del West, Tosca, and Maria Stuarda, returns to lead the Baltimore Opera Orchestra. Aïda will be staged by Italian director/designer Paolo Miccichè who created the BOC’s productions of La Forza del Destino and Madama Butterfly.
